Vintage Map Painting

I found a wonderful vintage atlas with beautiful colored maps at a vintage market.
I have incorporated some of the maps into my encaustic paintings. In this painting I used the map of Australia.
In this painting I used a vintage map of Japan.
This painting is on a vintage map of Alabama. I like how the colors and images of the map show through the encaustic paint. I think the white encaustic beeswax creates the look of clouds.

  1. Susan, those are gorgeous! I love the substance that encaustic gives a work. And I haven't tried it yet. The birds and the map, what a great combination!

  4. Thank you Sarah & Sue.
Sue, I use a tool that is used in batik painting to create the dots.

  5. I just found you through etsy! I love encaustic and I am just starting to use them myself. Beautiful work!
And the tool you are talking about is called a tjanting needle. Perfect for creating precise lines and perfect jewel-like dots like yours. :)

  6. Thanks so much Laura. I've seen those batik tools. The tool I use is an electric kind of tjanting needle. You can find this tool at Enkaustikos. They call it a "wax writer." It's fun to use and you can create all sort of interesting shapes and dots using this tool.
